WHAT IS CLINICAL HYPNOSIS?
As humans, we are wired to go into a daydream or trance state. Have you ever been so absorbed in an activity that you did not hear someone calling your name? Have you ever pulled into a parking spot and said to yourself, “How did I get here?” Chances are you were in the kind of trance which happens to all of us spontaneously.
It is this capacity that we utilize purposefully for clinical hypnosis.
A distinction must be made between stage hypnotists who use our capacity to go into trance for “entertainment”, and those who are clinical practitioners who facilitate trance to treat a vast array of conditions such as anxiety and mood disorders, addictions, hypertension, post-traumatic stress disorder, pain management, weight control and eating disorders, cancer and chemotherapy, infertility, preparation for labor and delivery, performance enhancement for academics or sports, to name a few. Hypnosis has been used in conjunction with medical services since the 1700s and
was approved by the American Medical Association in 1958.
Emotional difficulties are rooted in a combination of our genetic nature and the impact of our life experience. You might choose clinical hypnosis if you decide that your emotional well-being needs some attention. A well-trained hypnotherapist can support your healing or growth with hypnosis whether the issues seem to originate in the body, the mind, the circumstances, or your environment. Hypnosis has an
astounding power to transform.
Clinical hypnosis is nothing more than deliberately allowing a therapist with whom you feel safe to absorb your attention with relaxing imagery. Then you might be encouraged to utilize the fertility of your mind’s eye to visualize physical receptivity to medical treatment as in the case of infertility or cancer, or to discover hidden, internal resources and responses that can take you beyond learned limitations no matter what the issue.
When we go into trance, we go into an internal place where we are unconcerned with time and therefore we are in the present moment. Sometimes the conscious mind intrudes but, the inner stillness we can create allows us access to the place where our wisdom resides and allows us to be receptive to new ideas and possibilities. The trance state allows us to be open to creative approaches to difficulties by direct or indirect suggestion provided by the therapist or by virtue of our unconscious mind revealing to us that which we already know but which we did not know we knew.
Hence the stage is set for change to occur.
Hypnosis is used to encourage a connection with you that is profound and productive. Trusting your hypnotherapist to talk to your conscious mind and facilitate the goals that you set for yourself can release old ways of being, facilitate new ways of being or both. This in turn can have an impact on your physiology and emotionality in a powerful way and can have an impact on how you feel in the world and how you relate to others.
